MOSCOW, Dec 12 (PRIME) – The Russian government is discussing cutting the construction volume under the second stage of extension of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) and the Trans-Siberian Railway (TransSib) and postponing some works, business daily Kommersant reported on Monday citing documents and sources.
A Russian Railways source said that the target capacity after the second stage of extension of the railways, collectively called the Eastern Polygon, will be reached. However, the company was assigned to "consider possible optimization" of the second and third stages in order to reduce deficit in financing.
The new capacity plan was reduced on most BAM segments by between 11.2 million tonnes and 24.1 million tonnes as of the end of 2024, rising only on the Izvestkovaya–Birobidzhan and Birobidzhan–Volochayevka stretch by 12.3 million tonnes and 8.6 million tonnes respectively.
